How Deep Should Fence Posts Be?

The short answer
A common rule is one third of the post's above-ground height — about two feet for a six-foot fence — and always below your local frost line, whichever is deeper. Gate and corner posts go deeper still. Post depth is the single specification that most determines how long a fence stays standing straight.

Two things make this deeper rather than shallower: solid privacy fences, which catch wind like a sail and load posts far more than open fences, and tall fences, where leverage multiplies that force at the base.
The frost line overrides the rule
Wherever the ground freezes, frost depth is the binding constraint. Water in soil expands as it freezes, and a footing sitting above that depth gets lifted a little each winter and doesn't fully settle back. Over several seasons that's how a straight fence becomes a wavy one — and no amount of concrete fixes it, because the concrete is what's being lifted.
Frost depth varies enormously — near zero along the Gulf, and four feet or more across the northern states. Your local building department publishes the figure for your area, and any competent local contractor will know it. If a quote doesn't state post depth, ask for it in writing.
Concrete or gravel?
Genuinely debated among installers, and worth understanding rather than taking on faith.
Concrete gives maximum rigidity, which matters for gates and in high wind. The risk is that a concrete collar can hold water against a wood post, accelerating the rot it was supposed to prevent — unless the top is crowned (sloped) so water sheds away from the wood rather than pooling at it.
Gravel drains freely, keeps the post base drier, and makes replacing a post years later dramatically easier. It gives up some lateral stiffness, which matters most on gates and tall solid fences.
The common compromise: a gravel base for drainage with crowned concrete above. Whichever is used, the post itself should be rot-resistant or properly treated — even under cedar panels.
Why this is the spec that matters most
Fences don't usually fail at the panels. They fail at the posts, at ground level — and post depth, spacing, and setting are what determine when. It's also completely invisible once the job is done, which is exactly why it's worth pinning down beforehand: you cannot inspect it later without digging.
When comparing quotes, a cheaper bid is often cheaper here — shallower holes, wider post spacing, thinner posts. None of it shows on handover day; all of it shows in year five. Check what you're being quoted.
